Jesus Light Painting

Jesus Light and Love was presented as a gift to Ascension Episcopal Church by the artist Alexander Anufriev (b.1940) on September 2, 2013.  A native of Moscow, Russia, Anufriev was an underground "unofficial" artist in the former Soviet Union  because his painting were of a spiritual nature.  He is strongly influenced by Italian Renaissance art and by Russian icons.  A leader of the non-conformist artist group of Odessa, Alexander immigrated to the United States in 1980 seeking freedom of artistic expression.  Alexander and his cellist and composer wife, Tanya Anisimova, spent four months at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts at the invitation of director William Smart in 1995.  They lived and worked in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Central Virginia for a number of years and now reside in the greater Washington D.C area.  The majority of Anufriev's work hangs in museums and private collections in Europe, the former Soviet Union, and the United States.

The mission of Ascension Church is to worship God through the teachings and love of Christ and the traditions of the Episcopal Church; and to provide support and services to those in and around Amherst, Virginia.
